Dishwasher Tablet Not Dissolving

Finding an almost intact tablet at the end of a wash often means dishes are still dirty and the cycle has achieved little. A dishwasher tablet not dissolving can have several causes, from the dispenser door being blocked by a tray to inadequate water circulation or a programme that is too short for the detergent. The position of the leftover tablet is an important clue.

Dishwasher Tablet Not Dissolving: First Clues

If the tablet is still sitting inside the closed detergent compartment, the compartment may not have opened when expected. A large plate, pan handle or incorrectly loaded basket can obstruct the flap. With the appliance switched off, check that the door opens freely and that nothing in the loading arrangement touches it.

If the compartment opened but a partly dissolved tablet is lying in the bottom of the tub, think about water reaching the detergent and the cycle conditions. The problem might involve spray-arm obstruction, unsuitable programme selection or insufficient heating rather than a faulty dispenser.

Check Loading, Storage and Programme Choice

Store dishwasher tablets in a dry location and handle them with dry hands. Moisture can make some tablets swell or stick inside a wet compartment. Check the product instructions and use the detergent type specified for the machine. Do not put a tablet into an unsuitable compartment or add extra detergent to compensate for a failed wash.

Confirm that tall items and utensils cannot block spray-arm movement. A rapid wash may be designed for lightly soiled dishes and may not suit every all-in-one tablet. Refer to the appliance and detergent guidance when selecting a programme; using a longer cycle is not automatically a cure for mechanical faults.

Cleaning Areas You Can Safely Access

After the machine has cooled and is switched off, check the removable filter for food residue and clean it according to the handbook. Inspect the accessible spray arms for blocked holes and clean them only by the method the manufacturer recommends. Refit everything securely before the next wash.

A poor result with cloudy glasses is not identical to a tablet that has failed to dissolve. Water hardness, rinse aid settings and dishwasher salt may affect the finish on dishes even when the detergent was released normally. Keeping these symptoms separate helps avoid unnecessary repairs.

When Water Flow or Heating May Be at Fault

If the machine repeatedly finishes with a full tablet, little evidence of spraying, unusually cold dishes or a fault code, the cause may be beyond routine cleaning. A defective wash pump, spray mechanism, heater or dispenser can produce similar results, but the correct repair depends on testing.

Do not remove electrical covers or attempt to bypass the door switch to observe operation. Stop using the appliance if there is a substantial leak, burning smell, electrical trip or unsafe heating. An engineer can assess water circulation and the operation of relevant components.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should the dishwasher tablet go in the bottom of the machine?

Usually it belongs in the designated dispenser unless your appliance or detergent instructions say otherwise. Placing it loose in the tub can release detergent at the wrong stage of the programme.

Can a short wash leave part of a tablet behind?

Yes, depending on the detergent and programme. Some short cycles are less suitable for certain tablets. Check the detergent packaging and dishwasher handbook before switching programmes.

Does an undissolved tablet mean the heater is broken?

Not necessarily. A blocked dispenser, obstructed spray arm or poor water circulation may be responsible. Repeated failure together with cold wash results can justify professional diagnosis.
